New book “Guide to IT Restructuring”

Software is like a beautiful garden. Without constant care and attention it can quickly get out of control. The renovation of existing software systems is one of TNG's core activities. Christoph Stock has been responsible for many such projects over the years. Now he has assembled his knowledge and experience in the book "Guide to IT Restructuring" (in German). He shares strategies, background information, tips and checklists for carrying out IT restructuring projects and reducing technical debt. Do you have an IT renovation project and need support? ArchUnit 1.0.0 Release

The open source library ArchUnit has reached version 1.0.0 after more than 6 years of continuous development. The tool for architectural maintainability and consistency of Java projects was originally created by our TNG colleague Peter Gafert. To date it has more than 60 contributors and over half a million monthly downloads from Maven Central.

Version 1.0.0 fully supports analysis of lambda calls and method references. The APIs have been overhauled to further reduce the risk of misuse and guide you in writing more efficient and concise rules for your application's architecture.

ArchUnit can help you with dependencies between packages or components, naming conventions, annotations and layered or onion architecture. So, if you're not using ArchUnit yet, give it a try! And feel free to reach out with any feedback or questions onn GitHub.

AI for kids - TNG on the children's news show "neuneinhalb"

Will artificial intelligence be able to take over the work of humans? How creative can machines be? With their AI experiment, the reporters of the children's news show "neuneinhalb" try to answer these questions. An artificial intelligence writes this episode's script and also composes the background music. Our Innovation Hacking experts Jonas, Thomas and Martin offer advice and support. They show how Deepfakes can be used to switch the hosts and also look into the dangers behind the technology. The show for old and young is available here (in German).

Database migration for a webshop

One of our clients, a well-known fashion retailer, faced a major challenge. With a tight deadline, and a maximum of 6 hours downtime, the Oracle databases of the webshop system needed to be migrated to Microsoft SQL Server. As such, a TNG team was tasked with adapting the applications to the target database system and coordinating the data transfer in cooperation with internal and external colleagues.

A direct migration "in one go" was not possible due to the volume of data and the available network capacity. Instead, the team followed a two-step approach. Before the actual migration and while the system was running, the new database was pre-filled from a snapshot. During the downtime, the largest and most stable data tables were only updated, while smaller tables and fast-changing content structures were completely refilled.

The project was a success: after post-migration testing, the shop resumed full operation by the end of the planned downtime. Thanks to prior load tests and performance optimisations, the change went unnoticed by the end users. This new setup helps our client to manage growth in the coming years and paves the way for a future migration to the cloud.

Data use in the age of the GDPR (2/2)

Data is valuable - one would ideally like to take advantage of it as much as possible. However data protection rightly restricts this to prevent abuse. In the second article of the series "Data use in the age of the GDPR", Stefan Kunkel explains how the anonymised use of data can be achieved organisationally and technically.

Data use in the age of the GDPR (1/2)

Can customer data still be used for other purposes after the GDPR? Our TNG colleague Philipp Kleppmann says yes, as long as they are sufficiently anonymised. In this LinkedIn article, Philipp outlines important considerations that should not be forgotten when starting an anonymisation project.

New and Old Faces at our Summer Retreat

In addition to our Big Techday and the big summer party, our annual summer retreat also took place in July. The event is held as a bar camp and all colleagues can contribute ideas, plan and discuss the strategical development of the company. The beautiful Alpine setting plays backdrop to a host of activities, from alpaca hiking to white-water rafting, through which it's just as easy to make new acquaintances as it is to see old faces again. We're already very much looking forward to the summer retreat in 2023!
